Custom Fields
#Overview
Custom fields hold the case details your firm records on every matter: the court, a case number, the opposing
party, a filing deadline. They appear on the matter's Overview tab under Case details, and you can filter
the matters list and board by them.

| Setting |
Details |
| Label |
What staff see, for example "Court" |
| Key |
Generated from the label. It can be edited until the field is saved, then it is locked because filters and Smart Form mappings use it |
| Type |
Short text, long text, number, date, dropdown, single choice or checkbox. Locked once any matter has a value |
| Practice areas |
All practice areas, or only the ones you tick |
| Options |
For dropdown and single choice. Options can be reordered and retired, never deleted, so old matters keep their value |
| Required |
Checked the next time a matter is saved, never on existing matters |
| Pin to board cards |
Up to two fields show on each board card |
Archive hides a field from matters but keeps every value, read-only. Archived fields are listed under
Archived (N) with Restore.
#Filling fields
- Staff edit values inline on the matter's Overview tab. Each value shows where it came from (a Smart Form or a
staff edit) and when.
- From a Smart Form: in the form builder, select a question and pick the matching field under Case details →
Fill case detail. When staff accept a submission, the answers are copied onto the matter, and the activity history lists what was copied and what was
not (for example a date that could not be read).
#Filtering
On Matters, both the list and the board have a Custom field filter: pick a field and a value.
#Best Practices
- Add only what you record on most matters. Rare details belong in notes.
- Prefer dropdowns to free text for anything you want to filter by, such as the court.
- Pin the one or two fields your team scans the board for.
